Prenatal Chiropractic: Everything Moms-to-Be Want to Know (But Don’t Always Ask)
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey—but let’s be honest, it’s also a time of major change, both physically and emotionally. As your baby grows, your body shifts to make room for baby, it’s not uncommon to experience discomfort, pain, and have a whole lot of questions.
That’s where prenatal chiropractic comes in.
If you've ever wondered whether seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy is safe, effective, or even necessary, you're not alone. This blog dives into the most common (and some unspoken!) questions moms-to-be have about chiropractic —and gives you the honest, helpful answers you’ve been looking for.
Is it safe to get adjusted while pregnant?
Yes!!! —when you see a chiropractor trained in prenatal care, it’s not only safe, but incredibly supportive for not only mom, but baby too. Prenatal chiropractors use gentle, specific techniques tailored to each stage of pregnancy. We use specific, intentional adjustments to help your body function better as it changes and adapts.
Why would I even need chiropractic care during pregnancy?
Great question. As your baby develops and grows, your center of gravity shifts, your posture changes, and hormones like relaxin loosen your ligaments. All of this can cause:
- Lower back or hip pain
- Round ligament discomfort
- Sciatica
- Pelvic pressure
- Sleep issues
- Digestive struggles
Prenatal chiropractic care helps create and maintain balance within the spine and pelvis—supporting not just comfort, but optimal nervous system function and even better baby positioning as you approach birth. When there is balance within the pelvic pregnant moms usually experience less pain!!!
Can chiropractic help if my baby is breech?
While chiropractors don't physically turn babies, techniques like the Webster Technique help gently align the pelvis and reduce tension in the ligaments around the uterus. This can create more space for baby to naturally move into the head-down position. Many moms who see a Webster-certified chiropractor see their baby have optimal fetal positioning.
Will it hurt?
Not at all. In fact, most moms say they look forward to their adjustments because it feels like such a relief. We use special pregnancy pillows and adjusting tables to accommodate your growing baby, and the techniques are calming, controlled, and always within your comfort level.
Do I have to go every week?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is VERY personalized. Frequency depends on symptoms(such as pain, discomfort, heartburn, sleep and more), health goals, daily activities, and more. Some moms benefit from weekly care, especially if they're experiencing pain or approaching their due date, at Peak Potential Chiropractic we call the third trimester the labor prep phase of care. However, other moms may only need the occasional tune-up. After your complimentary consultation, we’ll create a plan that feels not only right for you, but works for your lifestyle and financial needs.
Can it really make labor easier?
While every birth is different, research and experience suggest that routine prenatal chiropractic care can support a smoother, faster labor and delivery by keeping the pelvis properly aligned and reducing nerve interference. Many moms who receive regular care throughout pregnancy report:
Shorter labor times
Less back labor
Improved postpartum recovery
Decreased incidence of perineal tearing
Again, your body was made for this—and chiropractic helps it do what it’s designed to do, with less resistance.
What happens during my first visit?
Your first appointment is all about getting to know you, your pregnancy, and your goals. At Peak Potential Chiropractic, Dr. Rebecca likes to go over your goals for the arrival of baby. We’ll go over your health history, explain how our office works, and answer any questions you may have. If you choose to move forward, then we will do a specific, gentle exam, and walk you through exactly what care will look like. No pressure, no rushing—just education, support, and space to ask every question on your mind. If you feel ready, then we perform the first adjustment!
Do I need a referral from my OB or midwife?
Nope! You can book directly with a prenatal chiropractor, though many OBs, doulas, and midwives actually recommend chiropractic because of how well it compliments prenatal health.
If you're working with a birth team, Dr. Rebecca LOVES to collaborate so everyone’s on the same page.
